We understand that many Fallingwater visitors will have mobility and other types of accessibility concerns. We are constantly working to make the visit comfortable for all ages. If you haven’t visited us before, here are a few tips to help you make your visit more enjoyable:
- All Fallingwater tours are walking tours. While some arrangements may be made for the comfort of guests with limited mobility, guests must be able to walk and stand throughout most of the tour. There are no places to sit down in the house itself.
- Comfortable walking shoes are a must!
- There is a 1/4 mile gradual downhill walk outdoors from the Visitors Center to Fallingwater with a marvelous first view. Limited van transportation is available for visitors who really cannot make this walk. Please ask at the Visitors Center desk for this service when you are assigned to a tour group. Van service is also available at the end of the tour for the walk back up the hill. Ask your tour guide to arrange for that at the end of your tour.
- There are no public restroom facilities at Fallingwater itself. Please use the facilities at the Visitors Center before beginning your tour.
- Fallingwater is not air-conditioned.
- Fallingwater is a multi-storied house with over 100 steps from the first level to the Guest House on top of the hill. Because both houses are museums with original furniture exactly as it was left by the Kaufmann family, there are no places to sit down once the tour has begun. If you do not wish to climb to the higher floors, simply tell your tour guide that you would like to leave the tour after visiting the living room area. The van will return you to the Visitors Center where you will be able to view a video tour of the upper floors. You may rejoin your party at the Visitor Center when they return from the tour.
- Visitors using wheelchairs may visit the first floor of the house and then go to the Visitors Center to view a video showing the upper floors of the house. Wheelchairs must be able to fit through a 28" doorway to access the first floor. Additional information for visitors with wheelchairs is available by calling Visitor Serivces at 724-329-8501.
- For visitors who are hearing impaired, we can arrange for a sign-language interpreter to conduct a tour, if scheduling permits it, at no extra charge. However, we require a minimum 2 weeks advance notice. We do not charge admission to sign–language interpreters who will be interpreting the tour for visitors. A booklet describing the rooms of the house is also available at the Visitors Center.
- Visitors with vision impairments are provided with a more descriptive tour that allows some "light" touching. Please make arrangements in advance so that we may have a guide available for the tour.
