College Residencies

Nestled in the magical woods of the Laurel Highlands…a stone’s throw from a masterwork…studying alongside leading Frank Lloyd Wright scholars. Could there be a more inspiring way to pursue your passion for architecture?

This spring, Fallingwater will host its fifth annual College Residency for Students of Architecture. With on-site design studios and practicing, professionals to guide you, you’ll take part in an intense immersion into one of Wright’s most iconic works. Twelve students will be selected to enjoy one of the most memorable learning experiences of their lives.

Applications must be received by March 1, 2008

Tuition

$750 (includes room and board)

Eligibility

If you’re an undergraduate student enrolled in an architectural professional degree or a pre-professional degree program, you’re eligible to apply.

Program Information

  • Students will explore Fallingwater from above and below, inside and out. While in residence, students will observe the ecology of the western Pennsylvania landscape, examine the value of sustainable building and contextually derived building methods and pursue the poetry of light and sound which is so palpable in Wright's work.
  • Students will also complete several short drawing and design projects and be challenged to look closely at their surroundings while pursuing a broader dialogue of building materials, forms and methods. Taking inspiration from a rare “insider” access to Fallingwater, students will translate their insights toward new forms, new solutions, and new methods of building.
  • You’ll get a chance to look beyond Fallingwater to see and explore several masterful examples of architecture's potential to improve the way we live with a visit to nearby Kentuck Knob (also by Wright)and an examination of the urban space and architecture of Pittsburgh.
  • Projects, drawing assignments, and discussions will focus on:
    • How do we make buildings a continuation of their surroundings?
What inspiration can we derive from local qualities of light? Local colors? Locally derived materials?
    • In acknowledging the importance of preserving the natural qualities and ecologies of our environment, how can we build to support – even to enhance – our environment?
    • How can the addition of a building improve the landscape?
    • How can a more intelligent approach to the urban environment also help to preserve the condition of our rural places?
