Join fellow educators for an exhilarating week-long learning opportunity for K-12 teachers. Experience how learning through architecture and design can assist your students in gaining valuable 21st century thinking skills. The Fallingwater Teacher Residency course introduces the concept of activity-based inquiry with an emphasis on problem solving through architecture.
Focusing on Fallingwater with a transdisciplinary eye, teacher residents will use the evaluation and creative problem solving process of design as a model for stimulating student centered learning. We will explore the visual arts, history, architecture, sustainability, and the relationship of architecture and nature. Teacher residents will be immersed in a transformative and supportive learning environment with a focus on creative inquiry within each of their disciplines. This course will be taugh by a veteran architectural educator with experience specific to K-12 curriculum.
Andrew P. Phillips, AIA is an award-winning practicing architect and educator from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with degrees from The Pennsylvania State University and Harvard University. His extensive teaching background includes 15 years teaching at The University of Pennsylvania before departing to teach at The Charter High School for Architecture + Design in 2009. He is the Director of Design Education and the Design Faculty Chair. CHAD is a tuition-free, open application, public school of choice to 600 students in grades 9 through 12. There are no admission requirements of any kind to enroll at CHAD. Founded in 1999, it is the first architecture charter high school in the nation.

Teacher residents room dormitory-style at High Meadow, a country house located on the Bear Run Nature Reserve, a short distance from Fallingwater. The highlands setting with unsurpassed views of nearby Laurel Ridge will recharge your creativity and your spirit. We hold classes at the adjacent open-air studio and on-site at Fallingwater. This is a casual and natural learning experience, where daily activities can inspire great things! Meals are prepared locally and feature seasonal ingredients.
You must be a practicing teacher (any subject, any grade level) to apply. We select Teacher Residents based on your stated interest, qualifications, and your ability to take the Residency into the classroom. We limit enrollment to 10 students each year.
We will be accepting applications for the 2016 Teacher Residency Program in January 2016. Application Deadline: May 1, 2016.
